Jeffrey S. Mutnick

Jeffrey S. Mutnick has been representing Oregon and Washington asbestos victims for over 25 years. He helped write the legislation in Oregon that enabled asbestos victims and their families to seek restitution for their illnesses. He brought the first successful asbestos cases to court in the Pacific Northwest and has tried more asbestos cases in Oregon than any other lawyer.

As he works with his clients, Jeff explains the issues completely and clearly, so they feel comfortable and secure that someone is advocating for them and understanding their needs. His clients know that if they call his office and he is not in, they can phone him at home that evening to discuss their case. We call that peace of mind.

When it comes to making a difference in his profession, Jeff has an extensive and impressive resume. We highlight his legislative work, accomplishments, and union representation below.

Legislative Work

Drafted legislation that modified the statute of limitations to allow asbestos victims to pursue their compensation claims under the State of Oregon Compensation Act.

Drafted legislation to allow the victims of asbestos exposure to pursue their court cases by modifying the Oregon statute of limitations.

Helped draft proposed occupational disease legislation in conjunction with various labor organizations to protect injured workers from environmental and occupational hazards.

He was one of the original members of the Asbestos Litigation Group, a group of attorneys throughout the U.S. who started seeking documents from asbestos manufacturers more than 25 years ago. Their efforts led to the exposure of the manufacturers’ knowledge concerning the dangers of the product. The group continues to exchange ideas and legal documentation in an informal effort to assist members and their clients.

He participated in national depositions of medical and corporate witnesses.

He authored several articles on asbestos litigation.

He has served on the board of the American Lung Association of Oregon.

He cofounded and currently serves as a trustee of the Donald Dunn Memorial Safety Seminars for the Steamfitters Local 290.

He speaks at medical, labor union, and legal events and conducts seminars on the subject of asbestos exposure, litigation, and work-related injuries.

He served as an adjunct professor at Northwestern University from 1973 to 1978 and at Portland State University from 1977 to 1980.

He is ranked among Oregon's best personal injury attorneys in Best Lawyers in America and Who's Who in American Law.

He was elected to the American Board of Trial Advocates in 1989.

He was elected twice to the Oregon State Bar House of Delegates and has served on numerous committees at the Bar, including the Disciplinary Board, the Continuing Legal Education Committee, and the Civil Uniform Jury Instructions Committee.

He was appointed by the Governor of Oregon to serve on many task forces and was the first chairman of the State of Oregon Psychiatric Security Review Board.
